We Must Invest In Services So That Every Youth is Housed!

As affordability crises continue across New York, and as shelter populations in NYC remain high, the number of young people on their own with with nowhere to sleep at night continues to climbSome of the state’s most marginalized youth are overrepresented in NYC’s Runaway and Homeless Youth system, with many identifying as LGBTQ+, exiting the child welfare or juvenile justice systems, experiencing sexual exploitation, or struggling as young/expecting parents. Between January and July 2024, 1,100 young people were turned away from full shelters and sent back to the streets. The Department of Youth and Community Development does not have enough beds for young people, especially older youth, and many young people are driven onto the streets or into dangerous living situations as a result. City leaders must ensure that Runaway and Homeless Youth have access to the beds and supports they need.

Youth need stability, care, and safety. It is up to us and our communities to ensure young New Yorkers stay healthy, housed, educated, and safe, which includes protecting youth from housing insecurity. Please take a few minutes to fill out a letter urging City leaders to prioritize the needs of Runaway and Homeless Youth.
