Statement on State Budget Including Legislation to Raise the Age in New York

Press Releases

April 10, 2017

“Thanks to the leadership of Governor Cuomo, Speaker Heastie, Senators Stewart-Cousins, Klein and Flanagan, and the members of New York’s Assembly and Senate, New York’s children, families and communities all just got safer and stronger due to the passage of legislation that raises the age of criminal responsibility to 18 for thousands of youth. Because of this legislation, the justice system is becoming more humane and children, families and communities will be stronger and safer. This historic change, which brings New York in line with 48 other states, is also thanks to the voices of impacted youth and families, faith leaders, advocates, providers, legal service organizations, Family Court Judges, and citizens who have spent many years urging New York to Raise the Age! Special thanks to all our funders and in particular the New York Community Trust and the Gimbel foundation whose support has been essential to our effective advocacy.”
