Citizens’ Committee for Children’s Analysis of U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey

New York, NY, October 27, 2025 —  Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York (CCC) released a new data analysis revealing that families with children in New York City are disproportionately harmed by rising economic pressures, including unaffordable housing, income inequality, and low wages.

Key findings from the report include:

  • Nearly 1 in 4 NYC residents (22%) live below or near the federal poverty level, earning less than $39,000 a year.
  • Median income for families with children remains consistently lower than for families without children, and well below the estimated living wage needed to meet basic needs in NYC and far below what the estimated need for economic security.
  • Housing costs are at an all-time high, with about half of renter households considered rent burdened and nearly 30% severely rent burdened.
  • Unemployment is rising, especially among young adults aged 20–24, whose unemployment rate jumped from 11.3% to 13.2% in one year.

“These data illustrate the multiple economic threats children and their families are enduring in New York City.” said Raysa S. Rodriguez, Executive Director of CCC. “As we approach a new mayoral administration, it is imperative that city leaders prioritize policy solutions that address the affordability crisis – including expanding access to affordable housing, child care, and food supports – especially for children facing the most harm.”
