NEW YORK – Today, Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York (CCC) Executive Director Jennifer March issued the following statement on Mayor Adams’ November 2023 Financial Plan:
“At a time when communities are desperately trying to recover from the devastating health and economic impacts of the pandemic, the Mayor’s budget modification will have an immediate and long-term negative impact on children’s and families’ well-being. We are particularly concerned about reductions to community schools, early childhood care and education, afterschool and summer programs, as well as violence prevention and youth development programs for those at risk. It is notable that the largest cuts occur in the out years, which impedes open, public budget discussions and the ability to negotiate restorations.”
Last month, CCC released a new report that found more than 80% of families with children under five cannot afford child care in the city, while nearly four out of five families citywide cannot afford out-of-school care for school-aged children. Download the report here.
