On January 31st, 2022, Rebecca Charles, CCC Policy and Advocacy Associate, submitted a written testimony to the state’s Joint Legislative Hearing on Housing to address CCC’s response to the FY’23 Executive State Budget.
Rebecca commended Governor Hochul for her proposed investments in affordable housing, including a 5-year $25 billion plan to create and preserve 100,000 affordable homes throughout the state. However, Rebecca testified that the budget failed to take substantial steps to address the looming eviction crisis, which will come as a result of the expiration of the eviction moratorium on January 15th. Citing U.S. Census data that point to 27% of New York households with children being behind on rent and over 75,000 eviction filings submitted throughout the pandemic, Rebecca called on Governor Hochul to fund the state’s first ever rental subsidy program.
