CCC Testimony: Oversight – Hunger in New York City

Testimony & Public Comments

November 25, 2014

CCC testified about hunger and food insecurity, particularly for NYC children, at the New York City Council General Welfare Committee’s annual hunger hearing on November 24, 2014.

CCC’s testimony thanked the City Council for annually holding hearings on hunger before the Thanksgiving holiday and for all of the efforts of the Council and the Administration to address food insecurity in New York City.

CCC made recommendations to address hunger, food access and nutrition including:

  • Increase school meals options and participation rates by expanding Breakfast After the Bell citywide, continuing to expand the universal school lunch program to every NYC public school student, strengthening the summer meals outreach plans, and investing in DOE’s capital budget to improve school menus.
  • Strengthen the anti-hunger safety net in order to maximize participation in food assistance programs.
  • Expand existing efforts to bring fresh, healthy foods into all NYC neighborhoods, and establish new programming that brings food into underserved areas.
