CCC testified at the New York City Council Committees on Finance and Education at a hearing on March 21, 2017 regarding the Fiscal Year 2018 Preliminary Budget.
CCC supported the Preliminary Budget proposals to add $14 million for Summer in the City programs for at-risk 2nd graders and to expand STEM programming and summer school from 4 to 6 hours, and to add $14.83 million for SESIS system upgrades. CCC also supported the administration’s plan for a $495 capital investment from FY20-24 to create 38,487 new school seats.
CCC urged the administration to go further in the upcoming Executive Budget by expanding universal free lunch to all public school children; strengthening services and support for homeless school children (which includes restoring and baselining $10.3 million for social workers to help homeless children); maintaining funding for community schools; and funding the implementation of the recommendations from the Leadership Team on School Climate and Discipline.
